Sedation Dentistry

Dental phobia plagues millions of Americans across the country. It is one of the most common reasons many people choose to never see a dentist unless they have a toothache. Many will even wait until they simply can’t bear the pain any longer. However, waiting to get your dental problems treated can lead to severe or even permanent damage that may require invasive procedures.

Anxiety should never be the reason you avoid seeing a dentist. You and your family can get the dental care you need with minimal stress when you schedule an appointment with Dental Lifetime Dentistry. We offer sedation dentistry to keep you relaxed and content during procedures.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is a sedative agent commonly used in dental offices. When inhaled, laughing gas keeps you less aware of what is going on around you so that you can stay relaxed during even the most intensive dental work. For many patients, it also has the added benefit of creating a good or happy feeling.

Laughing gas is administered through a mask that is comfortably fitted over your nose. You will stay awake and will be able to respond to any instructions or questions. The effects wear off the moment the gas is taken away, so you will not feel groggy afterwards.

How Does It Feel to be Sedated with Laughing Gas?

Laughing gas does not make you sleepy, so you will stay conscious while inhaling it. Most patients feel relaxed and happy after breathing in laughing gas for a few minutes. Other effects sometimes reported are mild lightheadedness, giddiness, or tingling arms and legs.

Laughing gas has no color or smell and should not feel any different from inhaling regular oxygen. It is very safe and will not have any lasting effects once you are no longer inhaling it. You will be able to talk normally and drive home afterwards.
